The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) for the U.S. Department of Transportation performs stringent reviews of motor carrier records. Increased penalties and fines have been implemented.

Receiving an "Unsatisfactory" safety rating requires carriers to make upgrades within 60 days or face the possibility of having to suspend operations. In the case of passenger or HazMat haulers, "Satisfactory" upgrades must be made within 45 days.

Carriers that demonstrate an ongoing problem with safety issues will be fined. If the problem persists, suspension of activities will be imminent.

Delinquent payment of assessed fines (within 90 days) will cause carriers to be considered non-compliant, resulting in the potential closure of their operations.

The FMCSA also has jurisdiction over Intra-state compliance with controlled substance and alcohol regulations and hazardous material operations. The state DOT has implemented a compliance review program based on the Federal requirements.
